It’s that time of year again for family, friends and food! With all the festivities, it can be easy to let your healthy habits fall by the wayside. I have put together 10 tips and tricks to help you stay focused and on track during the holiday season:
Make healthy choices at holiday parties.
When you're attending a holiday party, be mindful of what you're eating and drinking. Fill your plate with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein. Drink water and limit the sugary and alcoholic beverages.
Get regular exercise.
This time of year is very busy. Taking time to exercise is important. Even if you get out for 20 minutes a day and walk, swim or bike ride. Make exercise a priority.
Get enough sleep.
Most adults need around seven to eight hours of sleep per night. When you're well-rested, you are better able to manage stress and less likely to make unhealthy nutrition choices.
Manage stress.
This time of year can get very stressful with festivities, kids out of school, shopping, family events, etc. It is important to keep your stress levels down. Try doing some meditation, yoga or just walking the beach to clear your mind and re-set.
Don't skip meals.
Skipping meals can cause unstable blood sugar levels and lead to overeating. Make sure to eat regular meals and light healthy snacks throughout the day to keep your blood sugar levels stable.
Think portion control when it comes to food. It is easy to load up that plate during the holidays. Try using smaller plates and bowls and just trying small bites of things you REALLY like. Savor your food by eating slowly. This will allow your body time to register when it is satisfied without stuffing yourself.
Limit your intake of processed foods.
Processed foods are often high in calories, sugar, and unhealthy fats. Limit your intake of these foods and choose healthier whole-food options instead.
Don't feel obligated to eat everything.
Try having single bites of things you want to try. Don’t feel like you have to eat everything just because it is there.
Eat something healthy at home.
If you have plans to attend a party where you know there will be tempting food, eat something healthy at home before you go so you don’t overindulge. This will help you be mindful of what you are putting in your body.
Enjoy the holidays!
The holidays are a time to celebrate with family and friends and enjoy yourself. Don't let stress or guilt ruin your holiday fun.
Following these tips can help you stay healthy and happy during the holiday season. Remember, it's all about moderation and making healthy choices.
